HER Place

Our Women's Addictions Recovery Outreach Center  -- HER Place in Huntington, WV -- is a place where women, children, and families can find a safe and nurturing environment that will offer free access to peer support services and educational programs that will empower recovery from addictions and transformation of lives.

HER Place is a non-profit organization dedicated to the mission of fostering Hope, providing Education, and supporting Recovery for women who suffer from alcohol and drug addiction. Our Women's Addictions Recovery Outreach Center is a place where women, children, and families can find a safe and nurturing environment that will offer free access to peer support services and educational programs that will empower recovery from addictions and transformation of lives.

HER Place is the product of tireless efforts of a group of women dedicated to providing creative solutions to the epidemic of substance abuse that plagues our community and the lack of recovery resources for women, children, and families.

We have received seed money from local grant sources to rent and furnish temporary office and classroom space in the Barnett Community Center located at 1524 Tenth Avenue. We also offer four part-time recovery coaches, and numerous volunteers from the recovery community - all who are ready to provide peer recovery support services, addictions recovery education classes, health and wellness programs, life skills workshops, and trauma-informed women's support groups.

Our drop-in center is open Monday-Thursday 9:00am-5:00pm, Friday 9:00am-4:00pm. We are planning to implement our Family Recovery Program on Saturdays, and in time we envision having our own space so we can expand our programs to include rehabilitative childcare services, after-school programs, and more family-centered recovery activities.

Our vision is to fill the gaps in the continuum of care between early intervention, treatment, and recovery by providing:

  • Early Intervention outreach, information, and referral services for women who come to our drop-in center from off the streets seeking help with addiction.
  • Peer Recovery Support Services for women who remain on long waitlists for treatment (up to six months for 28-day treatment and up to two years for long-term programs that accept children).
  • Post-Treatment relapse prevention planning, addictions recovery education, life skills and work readiness workshops, health and wellness programs, and trauma-informed peer support groups- all tailored to meet the specific needs of women in early recovery.

Our WV-certified Peer Recovery Coaches will interact directly with women, both individually and in small groups, to fill the gaps in the continuum of care by providing pre-treatment outreach services and post-treatment peer support services necessary to sustain long-term recovery. Peer support services are designed to:

  • Foster hope by sharing the lived experience of success in overcoming addiction. Serve as a role model for effective strategies, tools, and skills to prevent relapse.
  • Provide outreach, information, and referral services. Support, encourage, and advocate for women who are placed on long waitlists for addictions treatment.
  • Empower recovery self-management. Assist in development of individualized recovery and wellness goals. Provide accountability in monitoring progress.
  • Promote the development of healthy relationships and important social support networks in the local recovery community. Connect participants with various 12-step/recovery support groups, both secular and faith-based.
  • Provide low-level, community-based case management. Assist participants in identifying their most basic needs (treatment, mental health services, housing, etc.) and in accessing important social services and resources in the local community.
  • Assist families, non-peer supporters, and the general public to understand the insidious nature of addiction, the importance of peer support services, and the value of knowledge based in the lived experience of individuals in recovery.
